Door Controller Version 1 (Legacy)

The first version of the hardware, in 2011, was a standalone design constructed with wire-wrap on stripboard. It featured an Atmel ATMEGA328 microprocessor, an RS232 level shifter for serial communication, and screw terminals for all connections.

It had no native Ethernet connectivity, using serial (RS-232) only, and allowed the use of an optional external RS-232 to Ethernet converter.

One of the first deployments of this version of the door controller was in Edinburgh. An original board from this installation can be seen in the photos below.

Arduino Shield Version

The subsequent revision of the version 1 door controller, introduced in 2013, was constructed using standard stripboard (veroboard) and was designed to act as an Arduino “shield”. This allowed the use of standard supporting components, which simplified field maintenance.
